Flowers for Oma — Elegy for Ursel

When Anna, who commissioned this Elegy, lost contact with her Oma (her grandma), she was just a child. The decision was not hers, she was too young to make such life-changing decisions. But as she grew up, she became more and more curious about the half of the family that she no longer saw.

When, as a young adult, she decided to reconnect with the rest of her family, she was fearful about how her Oma would react. But her Oma had a big, loving heart and as soon as she heard that Anna had got in touch, she sent Anna an absolutely enormous bouquet of flowers. Later, when Anna plucked up the courage to visit, Oma immediately made her feel at home, and Anna learnt that flowers were something that gave her Oma joy.

Ever since then, Oma's flowers have been a good luck symbol for Anna, representing love, safety and joy — something I've tried to capture in this piece.

RIP Ursel. Thank you for making Anna feel loved.
